Visit : Indian Botanic Garden –
the oldest Botanical garden in Asia founded by Robert Kyd in 1787 AD.
It houses almost every variety of tropical and Sub-tropical Plants, A herbarium,
Cactus House and Mangroves are of special mentions. However more tourists
are attracted to the Great Banyan Tree, which occupies it's position in the
Guinness Book and is about 250 years old.
Agri-Horticultural society of India –
another first in Asia was founded by Rev. William Carry in 1793 AD.
It houses many a rare plants, specially flowering plants. They also
conduct Horticultural Classes and Annual show in the month of January
is a crowd puller.
Indian Museum (Botanical Section) -
A great repository of agricultural life in India in nutshell. One can learn about the
growth and supply chain of various agricultural products. Some rare specimen
and unusual botanical collections are worth visiting.
Eden Gardens - The sister of Bengal governor Lord Auckland, decided to open a beautiful
park for the Europeans living around the fort William. She thus cleared the
remaining part of the estuarine forest and designed her dream park, later named
after her ( Emily Eden). A part of which has been converted into a Cricket
Stadium. However this park still has some great collection.
